Tips for long distance motorcycling
  • Plan carefully - know your limits!
  • Use a tank mounted map case and GPS to avoid unnecessary stops
  • Make sure your bike is well prepared - good tyres, brakes and fresh oil
  • Keep up a steady speed (it's all down to averages)
  • Choose interesting roads (motorways and dual carriageways lead to boredom)
  • Wear something bright - at least a reflective belt but preferably a Yellow Jacket
  • Keep warm - wear several layers so you can remove some if you get too hot
  • Don't overeat - it will make you tired
  • Take sandwiches and fresh fruit to avoid having to queue in cafes
  • Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration
  • For record breaking runs - start in the evening so you are fresh during the night
  • Head North at night, South in the day to make the most of the light
  • Head West in the morning and East in the evening to avoid riding into the sun
  • Know when to give up and have a rest - even a short nap can help
  • If in doubt - don't do it
